Media blocked from covering Buharis budget presentation.

Journalists, mostly from online news platforms, were on Tuesday barred from entering the National Assembly to cover the 2018 budget presentation by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The event is expected to start by 2p.m.

Journalists from PREMIUM TIMES and several other online publications, and some in the print and electronic media, were denied entry into the premises of the National Assembly as early as 7 a.m. Tuesday.

The journalists were stopped despite presenting their official and National Assembly identity cards, as their names were missing from an “accreditation list” prepared by the Research and Information Directorate of the National Assembly.

“That’s the instruction given to us,” a security operative, identified only as Nicholas, told PREMIUM TIMES. “I can’t do anything even if you’ve been covering here for years. My own work is just to check the list. There was a circular and this list was sent to us yesterday.”

One of the journalists denied entry, Damilola Adeniran of Order Paper, said he was at the Research and Information Directorate Monday morning but was not informed of the accreditation issue.

Goodness Adaoyiche of Pulse.ng was equally irritated. “I came to the National Assembly on Monday to find out if there would be accreditation against President Buhari’s coming today but my journalists colleagues said there was none, only for me to come today to meet a list without my name,” she said, frustrated.

The National Assembly also prepared and used a separate list for the legislative chamber where the presentation is expected to hold.

As a result, some journalists admitted at the main gate were still barred from accessing the main venue of the event.

This is not the first time the National Assembly would prevent journalists, mostly from online media, from covering major events.

Biafra : Anambra sets to postpone elections.

Voters Rights International has called for the postponement of the November 18 Anambra election, warning that the face off between the Nigerian Army and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) could jeopardize a successful conduct.

Voters Rights International president, Barrister Jezie Ekejiuba, said this in statement by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Anambra State, Dr. Nkwachukwu Orji penultimate Thursday at Awka.

Addressing the participants, Dr. Orji said that some of the challenges that may affect the election process include the pro-Biafra agitators, general discontentment in the SouthEast region and security challenges in the region which might rub off in the electoral process.

He also listed other challenges already affecting the job of the commission to include meagre funding, erratic power supply, policy delay and discontentment on the part of voters. Responding, VRI said it does not see how the commission will do any magic to overcome challenges identified by the commission in less than two months time.

It said: “Apart from the above INEC’s identified challenges to the poll, we recall the earlier threats posed to the poll as reported in the media including the boasts by Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) that it would stop the poll unless there was a referendum on Biafra before the conduct of the poll and the legal challenge by the pending Supreme Court case in Appeal No. SC.671/2016 INEC V. Barrister Jezie Ekejiuba and Anor in which the activist lawyer had already warned the commission that he would file an interlocutory application for an injunction to stop the commission from conducting the Anambra governorship election for excluding formerly deregistered political parties as alluded to by Dr. Orji in his above statement.
”We consider what is happening in the SouthEast region (including Anambra State) today as constituting as “other emergencies” and “cogent and verifiable reason” as provided in the above quoted provision of the Electoral Act enough for INEC as a responsible elect

Enugu has regained her enviable status as “the home state of Ndigbo.. The Obi of Onitsha.
His Royal Majesty, Igwe Nnanyelugo, Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe has expressed delight at the commitment of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State towards the promotion of arts and culture in the state, saying that Enugu has regained her enviable status as “the home state of the Nidigbo”.

Igwe Achebe spoke at the Government House, Enugu, when he led a delegation of Trustees and Members of the Organizing Committee of the Life in My City Art Festival (LIMCAF) to pay a courtesy call on the governor.

The revered traditional ruler, who is the Patron of the Festival, said that the purpose of the visit was to appreciate the governor for gracing the 10th anniversary of the festival, last year, and invite him to the 11th edition billed to hold in Enugu in October, saying that Gov. Ugwuanyi was the first Chief Executive Officer of a state to attend the event.

“We are here to invite you and also to ask for greater interest from the state government because this festival belongs to Enugu State and Ndigbo. It belongs to Nigeria. Charity begins at home. We are also mindful that after all said and done, Enugu is the home state and the home city of Ndigbo”, the Obi of Onitsha said.

LIMCAF is the largest annual gathering of artists and stakeholders of visual art in Nigeria that commenced in 2007 to encourage artistic creativity and awareness on environmental issues and provide space through art for young people to make meaningful statements about issues with their environment in country and beyond.

In his address, Gov. Ugwuanyi identified with the ideals and the mission of the festival, saying that they are in line with “the vision of my administration for sustainable youth development and the promotion of arts and culture in the State”.

The governor assured the promoters of the festival of his administration’s firm cooperation and assistance towards the establishment of the fiesta as a sustainable high profile event in Africa within the international arts calendar.

He noted that the festival is also helping to promote the Coal City of Enugu and the entire South East, as a credible

Govs. Rochas, Obiano and Okezie missing as South/East governors meet with Nnamdi Kanu in Enugu.

As tension heats up in the south east for the struggle and actualization of biafra amidst calls for the re-arrest of Nnamdi Kanu by the Fed Govt..the eastern governors converged in Enugu to find a lasting solution to the call for biafra....as they gathered to discuss such an important issue many were shocked to realize that the governors of Abia, Imo and Anambra were absent... Their absent might not be unconnected with some personal grudges they might bore against IPOB and it's leader Kanu who has become more popular than all the governors put together.....
In attendance were Prof. Ben Nwabueze (SAN ) and Evangelist Elliot Uko, at the Government House, Enugu.

The meeting,  according to the Chairman of the South East Governors' Forum, Gov. David Umahi, who briefed journalists alongside Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State and Deputy Governor of Anambra State,  Dr. Nkem Okeke, "deliberated on the demands of IPOB and noted their concerns accordingly".

"However,  the meeting agreed that these demands by IPOB should not be absolute, rather the South East Governors shall immediately engage the leader of IPOB,  Prince Nnamdi Kanu and the entire leadership of IPOB to further meetings and dialogue with a view to quickening the resolutions of all issues amicably", the governor said.

Gov. Umahi noted that the Governors of Abia and Imo States travelled out of the country.

Breaking : MTN sacks 300 staffs.

South African telecoms giant, MTN, has sacked 280 of its workers in its Nigeria arm, in a major job cut that is targeting at least, 25 per cent of its 1,8000 workers in the country, a company source confirmed yesterday in Lagos.

According to the source, some 200 permanent employees and about 80 contract staffers across various cadres, ranging from new graduates to senior managers, were affected in a move the source said is designed to inject fresh blood into the telco’s workforce.

Many of those sacked spent up to 15 years with the company having joined MTN as it opened its business in Nigeria in 2001.

Sources said affected workers were given a dismal severance of 75 per cent of their gross monthly income multiplied by the number of years with the company.

“Given that the company is about 16 years old in Nigeria, the severance package brought pain and discontent among the affected staff.

“With the payoff structure, senior managers with 15 years of service were left with about N15 million; most of the staff got less than N5 million,” company source explained.

MTN Nigeria recorded nearly $1 billion in profit in 2016. However, the telecoms firm was heavily fined by the Nigerian government for failing to disconnect 5.2 million unregistered subscribers.

MTN’sspokesman,FunsoAina, could not be reached for comments yesterday.

But a source familiar with the latest downsizing said 200 of those affected had earlier agreed to leave the company voluntarily.

The source said the sackings were as a result of “the changing dynamics of the telecoms industry in recent times”.

The source said the company introduced the voluntary severance scheme (VSS), to provide a window for one week in April, for persons who have served in MTN for five years and above to take up.

7 Illegal miners declared dead in jos

Seven people suspected to be illegal miners died while several others were injured when a section of a mining site collapsed in Jos, Plateau State last weekend.

Relatives of the victims were said to be reluctant to report the accident to law enforcement agencies for fear of being arrested, due to regular occurrence of such incident in mining sites across the state.

The incident occurred at Waduruk village in Jos South local council.

A source close to the village told journalists yesterday that three of the victims were members of the same family who had been in the mining business for more than two decades, adding that the other four were hired from the neighbouring village to help them in excavations.

“There were seven of them inside the pit digging the soil in search of solid mineral when the earth layer above caved in and buried all of them,” said the source.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Assistant Superintendent Tyopev Mathias Terna said yesterday that the command has not been briefed of the incident.

Meanwhile, about 313 mining companies have been sanctioned by the Federal Government over non-fulfillment of environmental obligations.
